Leaked: Windows 10 Cloud may just be what Microsoft needs to challenge Chrome OS
A new version of Windows 10 is in the works and this yet-to-be-released Windows OS may just be Microsoft’s veritable challenge to Chrome OS. According to Microsoft know-it-all Mary Jo Foley, this Windows OS SKU will be Microsoft’s direct challenger to Google Chrome OS. Windows power user The Walking Cat shared a screen dump of the Windows 10 header file, i.e. winnt.h, and two of the preprocessor directives are PRODUCT_CLOUD and PRODUCT_CLOUDN.
Those listings point to the existence of Windows 10 Cloud and Windows 10 CloudN. The CloudN SKU is essentially the same OS, sans pre-installed Windows Media Player. Sources, who spoke to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, confirmed that Windows 10 Cloud will be a “simplified version of Windows 10”, and it will only be able to operate Universal Windows Platform apps from the Windows Store. For now, it appears that Windows 10 Cloud will not be part of Microsoft Cloud Services as it will operate just like Windows RT or Windows 8.1 with Bing. Just think of the new simplified operating system as a full-fledged OS for low-cost computing devices like tablets or 2-in-1 detachable notebooks. Therefore, it’s logical to view Windows 10 Cloud as a direct challenger to Chrome OS. Do watch this space for more developments as we await the release of Windows 10 Creators Update. This major Windows OS update may just provide some vital clues about the existence of Windows 10 Cloud.
